  • Decibel Manipulation - Add - Average - Subtract

    To sum, average and subtract the functions are :
    dB (sum) = 10 x Log (10 ^ (dB(0) / 10) + .... 10 ^ (dB(n) / 10))
    dB (average) = 10 x Log((1 / n) x (10 ^ (dB(0) / 10) + .... 10 ^ (dB(n) / 10)))
    dB (subtract) = 10 x Log10((10 ^ (dB(0) / 10)) - (10 ^ (dB(1) / 10)))
    The decibel is a logarithmic power ratio NdB = 10 x log(W / Wo) : { W = Watt }
    The ratio is always to a reference value, in the case of sound : Reference = 20 µPa (Threshold of Hearing)
    If the unit being used is not 'power' the unit must be squared : i.e. Volt ˛ or Pascal ˛
    Hence : NdB (non power) = 10 x Log (V ˛ / Vo ˛) = 10 x Log (V / Vo) ˛ = 20 x Log (V / Vo)
